Fanfic Nicknames

(Anonymous) 2025-06-04 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
What are some of the most annoying nicknames you've seen people give others in fanfic?

Ones that sometimes make me backbutton are "Der" for Derek and "Tones" for Tony. NO ONE IS USING THOSE! STOP!

In general, nicknames that seem out of character. There are characters who just wouldn't do cutesy nicknames. In my particular fandom, one that particularly irritates me is when Sauron (original name Mairon) gets nicknamed Mai by freaking Melkor and Melkor gets nicknamed Mel by freaking Sauron. Just, what? Instant backbutton, I know it is going to be OOC.

+1

If the character in question is known for acting cutesy and over the top, nicknames are just fine with me.

I don't think I've ever seen a fandom nickname I've liked, they're all horribly OCC.

Terms of endearment are fine but even those can hit into not feeling right for me. It really depends on the characters and how they're used. Some will absolutely use endearments and others I can't see them doing so. (But I also have an irrational hate towards the word 'baby' used in that context so I'll automatically balk at it even if it's canon lol).

The amount of times I've backed out of a fanfic because my inner "he would not say that" comes out the second there's a "babygirl" on the page...

I immediately back out of any MDZS fic I read where they call people by their given child name. "Ying, it's time to get up!" NO. That's not how that works! Also baobei is massively overused.

Re: Fanfic Nicknames

(Anonymous) 2025-06-05 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
There's so much room for error when MDZS fanfic is written by someone who's not familiar with Chinese culture and the whole naming etiquette thing... which is, I'll grant you, complicated as hell for most westerners. But I don't understand people who don't:

1) USE WHAT'S IN THE CANON, because why wouldn't you follow that obvious guideline?
2) Look it up or ask someone who is knowledgeable about how names and nicknames are utilized.

The most enraging fanon nickname I've ever seen is when the It fandom decided that they would all have the other kids call Richie "Chee." First of all, Richie is already a nickname, second NO ONE HAS EVER FUCKIN CALLED SOMEONE WHO GOES BY RICHIE "CHEE" THIS IS THE MOST UNBEARABLY APOPLEXY INDUCING LEVEL TWEE UWU GARBAGE EVER CREATED

Re: Fanfic Nicknames

(Anonymous) 2025-06-05 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
I came here to say this!

Like, if you're going to shorten Richie-- which, as you mention, is already a nickname!-- 'Rich' is a thing that human people actually call each other. 'Chee' is a sound a fuckin bird makes.

(Anonymous) 2025-06-05 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not even in this fandom and I recoil at the idea of "Chee".

Chee sounds like a monkey noise

I mean, "Tones" is a real nickname for people called Tony or Toni, I've heard it used. That said, I agree that non-canon nicknames are usually crappy.

It's not quite a nickname, but before Sheriff Stilinski got a canon first name (he is literally called Sheriff, Sir, or some form of Dad for 6 seasons), a lot of people in fandom gave him the fanon name of John. His name turned out to be Noah, but there's a lot of fic writers that insist on still calling him John (there's a tag), and I just roll my eyes at them. I do acknowledge that TPTB share a part of the blame for waiting so long to give the character a first name, but damn, I'm pretty sure they're not really sticking it to the man by keeping one of the most common English male given names.

Your favorite cooking shows?

(Anonymous) 2025-06-04 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
All the secrets about Top Chef, MasterChef, etc. make me think hmmm, I do watch some cooking show stuff, but have never gotten into those. Which ones do you recommend and where should I start, FS? I know that for something like MasterChef, there are many different series, and different countries, too.

I used to love them all. Top Chef, Master Chef, Great British Baking Show, Chopped, Guy's Grocery Games, others. But I stopped watching cooking shows because I realized I was eating a lot while watching them because they were making me think I was hungry when i wasn't.

I think the only one I ever really liked was Iron Chef, the original one.

I mostly just enjoy Great British Bakeoff. Though, Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives (or whatever order) is good background noise.

A feeling I can only describe as "cultural dissonance"

(Anonymous) 2025-06-05 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
I saw an ad tonight for a bipolar medication called Fanapt. It's animated in the Studio Ghibli style, and narrated by someone with what sounds like an Irish accent. The contrast between all of these things produced a very odd feeling in my brain, like, "these things do not all go together."

Have you ever felt something like that?

Re: A feeling I can only describe as "cultural dissonance"

(Anonymous) 2025-06-05 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
I wonder if it was AI.

That’s a lot of horrible things that shouldn’t exist together. No particular opinion on the Irish accent but everything else.

Sometimes I watch men playing guitar

(Anonymous) 2025-06-05 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
And I despair at how long their fingers are.

My fingers cannot stretch across the fret board the way that theirs can.

I am convinced that this has held me back musically.

I feel the same way about piano. My short stubby fingers were never going to excel at that. :(

Never tried to play guitar but this makes me a little sad. My short fingers can barely handle all four strings with a violin. Playing the guitar like Jimmy Hendrix will forever only be a lofty dream.
