I am physically uncomfortable even watching video of underwater stuff. Aquariums are a hard no-go. It's partially on Jaws, but also I was at a restaurant around age 4 and there was a large stuffed shark on the ceiling and I couldn't get away from it looking at me.

This was much more an issue when I was a kid and lived near the ocean. Now that I am an adult who lives 1 mile above sea level and 1000 miles from the ocean it's just a quirk.

I mean, it's a slice of life show, and you either like that kind of thing or you don't. Some people really enjoy characters living fairly normal lives and dealing with mundane, real-world types of problems. Other people find it boring, and it sounds like you're the latter.

Personally, I loved how soap opera-esque the story was and I really liked both Nanas (Hachi was my favorite of the two despite all her messiness). I haven’t reread it in a while though because I can’t stand that it’s unfinished, so who knows how I might feel about it today.

I dunno if I agree that the reason Nana’s had such staying power is because of the mangaka’s illness. There have been plenty of other manga that stopped suddenly or had a rushed ending due to the mangaka’s health (anyone know if Yami no Matsuei’s still a thing?), but I think the reason people still hope for the manga to return is because Nana and Hachi felt like real girls with real problems and we just want to know what happened to them after all the heartbreak they’ve endured.

It’s a bit of a you had to be there I believe - if you’re 15 watching or reading these girls’ love struggles it can read as quite the cautionary tale and make you grow as a person and now it’s either adults reminiscing it or kids feeling it making for this trend IMO.

For what it’s worth I had to try thrice to get into one of my favorite josei so I get slow pace struggles but my personal recommendation would be try watching until the kiss and if you don’t vibe just walk away.

My personal belief is that Ai Yazawa wanted a gay ending but the editors didn’t so she didn’t feel like making up a plan B and this is my belief based on the fact that she wrote a few queer characters before and some later chapters scenes are quite ambiguous.

I think I've tried reading NANA a couple times but I didn't really click with it so I never got far into the story. I did enjoy the animation and fashion a lot, and I think the fashion and animation style in the manga/anime is a reason for the staying power of this series. I didn't know anything about the creator's mysterious illness until I read this secret. It's possible that plays into fans' interest in NANA, but I think it's more likely the manga/anime style and characters appeal to a lot of people.

I don't remember if it made sense when I saw it in the theater, but it did prompt an extremely lively and nerdy discussion on the way home.

I should watch it again.
