Agnostic anon here, not particularly religious but from a religious background. I am okay with religious characters, but there's ways to portray one that annoy me. For one, I don't like being pushed a pro-religion or anti-religion agenda. A religious character is a character who follows a religion, not a device for the creator to push their views.
I will say, anti-religion discourse in fantasy settings weird me out when it's settings that markedly *have* gods that materially exist and are shown to impact the world. If everyone sees evidence that they exist, how could one say in-universe you don't think they are deities? Not worshipping them sure! Not thinking they're real?
