Favorite Spin-offs/sequels

Sort of based on secret 2, but what are your favorite sequels or spin-offs?

I still find The First Avenger super boring while loving The Winter Soldier.

I like the Home Alone in NYC more than the original.

I'm one of the few people who liked Dragon Age 2 more than Origins. I just really liked the party more and thought the local hero thing was a bit more interesting than the x-t "saving the world" plot.

Hellboy 2, Shrek 2 and Batman the Dark Knight.

Besides the obvious (Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, How to Train Your Dragon, Star Trek, a lot of the MCU)

I liked Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders, and I was sad it didn't make it past 2 seasons.

I like Lion King 2, Aladdin 2 and 3, and the music from Little Mermaid 2. And Moana 2 is awesome.

I liked the Sarah Jane Adventures and Class, two Doctor Who spin-offs.

I like all the Jurassic movies.

I enjoy basically everything set in Middle Earth, though to varying levels.

Star Trek Next Gen. Still my favorite Trek.

I love anything Middle Earth so it’s cheating for me to say any of those. :P

But for others: Spider-Man 2, Hellboy 2, X-Men 2, I don’t love it more than the first but The Mummy 2 is so much fun with characters I love, The Winter Soldier, Angel, Gremlins 2, Jurassic World, Crash Bandicoot Warped, I like most of the Scream sequels.

Aliens is my favorite movie.

For these I like the first movie best, but really enjoy these sequels, too: Jaws 2, Superman II, Halloween II, Halloween H20, Die Hard 2: Die Harder, Live Free or Die Hard, Terminator 2: Judgement Day, Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, Star Wars: The Return of the Jedi, Star Trek Beyond, Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde, Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, Incredibles 2, Toy Story 2, Toy Story 3, Final Destination 2, Final Destination 3, Jumanji Welcome to the Jungle, Spider-Man: Far From Home, Fast & Furious, Fast Five, Furious 7, Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Fright Night Part 2

I go back and forth as to whether I like the original or the sequel more for Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit, Happy Death Day 2U, Spider-Man: No Way Home

The Last Crusade is my favorite Indiana Jones movie (I also liked The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, the teenage Indy eps, at least), Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is my favorite Harry Potter movie. Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol is my favorite Mission Impossible movie. Captain America: The Winter Soldier is my favorite Captain America movie.

Not a really a good movie, but Grease 2 is just fun with catchy songs.

Speed 2: Cruise Control is a terrible movie, even with Sandra Bullock being her plucky, goofy, charming self and Willem Dafoe being an even more unhinged villain than the Green Goblin. From the explanation as to why Jack Traven isn't there to the slow crash into the dock, it's bad. But still, I kind of like watching it.

What media have you tried really hard to get into but just can't?

(Anonymous) 2025-05-15 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
I cannot get into One Piece. The art work is so f'ing ugly. And one of the main characters being a perv is not it for me. Though, I did like the live action.

LotR. It's my mom's favorite, she reads it almost once a year. I find the books so boring, and I fell asleep in the theatre when she dragged me to see the first LotR movie.

I read a lot of superhero comics so you think I'd deal with ugly art just fine, but the nose on that one guy in One Piece freaks me out.

The first that came to mind is Natsume Yuujinchou. I wanted to like it so bad because friends with the best of tastes loved it and it sounded great in theory. In practice I always fell asleep watching the first episode.

Second that came to mind was damnmei generally. Similar feeling I guess, of feeling immensely bored by old East Asian temples and legends and culture. I’m more of an urban contemporary fan I guess.

Demon Slayer, just didn't grab my attention. A bunch of my coworkers recommended it.

I hate being bad at video games

(Anonymous) 2025-05-15 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
I just want to enjoy the story without having to watch a let's play.

I feel you but can I say practice with the right titles and respect your learning curve. It’s probably easier the younger you are but… I’m visually impaired and manage to play most games just fine nowadays due to lots of practice, it actually helped me kind of overcome my brain impairment.

I get it. Sometimes it seems video games want to be as complicated and customizable for other reason than to have it be that way. Maybe for some, it adds to their experience, but I feel like if you need a damn walkthrough to pass half the game because you didn't have *that* specific configuration that you should've known about and should've been grinding for, had you just talked to potentially missable character who drops this hint at the beginning even though he's so vague about it! .... then I think the game needs to be rethought. (And I don't mind some customization, but IMO too many choices don't make it better.)

Well, maybe that's not what you mean, but at least some devs are being nice and adding story or casual modes to their games now.

It's 100% practice. Practice brings talent, and perspective. And of the two I think it's the perspective that's harder to achieve.

Like you don't hate being bad at video games, you hate being invested enough to want to know what happens, but not invested enough to care about getting progressing. You hate that you don't get the same sense of reward from beating the challenge as you do from finding out the next part of the story. Not a judgement, btw, no matter how it sounds, that's not my meaning.

Just an assumption, but I'll tell you how I arrived at it. I LOVE Baldur's Gate 3. But I just can't, no matter what, give a shit about the 400 menu's and radial options and very detailed and nuanced and admittedly very clever control scheme. I just don't vibe on RTS stuff. Give me a list if I HAVE to have 4000 options in any moment, but I'd always rather just press a button, or a series of buttons and have it directly tied to the action.

I'm sure I could LEARN to appreciate the radial confusion... but it just loses me.

Same. I learned that maybe I do indeed have ADHD because when I can't get better at a game I give up. There are some things I can pick up on rather easily that my older brother struggled with, but we're complete opposites with gaming.

I think my brother has more patience to see himself lose and fail in video games and build up the skills to become a better player.
Whereas for me, I keep thinking button mashing will miraculously make me a better player every time I try to get better at a game. And when I keep failing I just give up after a few hours/days/weeks.
Like...I'm OK at Mario Kart but playing against my brother, it's super obvious he's the gamer and I'm not LOL

I don't have the patience to watch a Let's Play either. I just ask my gamer siblings/friends what a game is about and listen to them explain. I still don't really know WTF the Final Fantasy games are about but one of my friends loved FF7 when we were teens.

I feel ya. First person POV is disorientating and I'm really bad at directions so even third person POV is tough. I

Luckily there are a zillion youtubers that'll just read the plot of a game back at you. I know, it's not the same.

I sometimes get interested in a game thanks to a good fanart.
But I really really do not want to learn how to play. I better spend my time doing basically anything else. And I need to start on a toddler level because I am that bad at games.

because I've had a hell of a day

dad has cancer in his upper intestine that's been contained to that area and he's going to have surgery in a couple of weeks. he's also got a smaller oesophagus so the surgeon is going to try and enlarge it.

this explains why he hasn't been eating like he should but he's also never had a large appetite. the surgeon is gong to cut out the cancerous part of the intestine and sew it together and hopefully he won't need an ostomy bag.

my sister trusts the surgeon. she's known him a long time (she used to be a nurse before she retired this year), so I'm going to trust that he knows what he's doing.

I'm still scared though. dad's 81. I don't know how much time I have left with him. my cat hasn't left my side today because he knows I'm worried.

fucking hell
