Washboard stomach was what most people called it in America until like 20-25 years ago. I still don’t understand the switch to six pack since there are eight muscles that make up the look.

I always heard washboard abs, never stomach.

I've never heard washboard abs, just washboard stomach.

I'm in the UK though.

AYRT
I heard both but moved a lot and stomach is what sticks in my memory more but you’re probably right that more said abs than stomach. But washboard instead of six pack was the norm.

Six-pack vs. Eight-pack (or Four-pack or even Two-pack)

Everyone's abdominal wall is made up of five different muscles that run from the ribs to the pelvis. The top layer, known as the rectus abdominis, is the longest muscle of the abdominal wall and is comprised of three fibrous bands that run vertically up the abdomen. Several fibrous tissues known as tendinous intersections run horizontally across the center vertical band, cutting the abdominal wall into sections, which eventually can give way to the appearance of six-pack abs.

The number of tendinous intersections you have indicates how many abs you show. This number is determined by genetics. Around 60% of the population is born with three tendinous intersections, which means most people would sport six-pack abs if they worked at it, according to multiple studies. Approximately 20% instead have four of these intersections, which make up eight distinctive abs. In rarer cases, a person may have fewer abs: about 15% of people max out at a four-pack and around 2% top out at a two-pack.

The number of abs you have has nothing to do with how strong your core is. Having an eight pack doesn't necessarily mean you have superior abs or stronger abs than somebody who was born with three of those tendinous intersections, where there are six sections. Some people just have more sections than others.

Uh. You started with "characters" and switched it up to sir and guys. I'm assuming this goes for women as well?

(Anonymous) 2025-05-15 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Women aren't allowed to go soft in the first place.

tbh I don't watch a lot of live action stuff but I can't remember any female cast members starting out skinny and ending fat. Damn. :\

(Anonymous) 2025-05-15 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
I get why this is a secret! The dehydrated shirtless look is nasty, but I get the idea of "female actors have to be on-trend perfection every second, male actors get away with a lot more". Like, I watched Rings of Power recently, and I was fine with everyone they cast, but god forbid a woman as basic-looking as the white guy playing Elrond would get a role. And of course the one major non-white elf had to be incredibly inhumanly handsome.

^ this anon is racist because she fixates on race and hates white people. Someone has to say it.

Except elves are supposed to be super attractive. Elrond in the movies doesn't look like an elf. He just doesn't.

(Anonymous) 2025-05-15 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
it doesn't make that anon any less racist.

(Anonymous) 2025-05-15 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
What? I am white! It's not racist to point out that there's a huge double standard in how white male actors are cast compared to non-white male actors or all kinds of female actors in a particular production.

what the fuck

(Anonymous) 2025-05-15 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
????????

(Anonymous) 2025-05-15 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
No, they don't.

Perfectly fair enough. I expect the same grace be shown to me when I feel the same disappointment about female characters. Whether I receive that grace or not, I still understand the unreasonable feeling of watching a show because it satisfies your desires, and then finding the disappointment as the actors become less desirable.

Which, BTW, is just ANOTHER reason I think this "Make every animation into live action" trend is going in the wrong direction. Make every live action animated. Cartoons don't age. Cartoons don't gain weight. Cartoons don't sag. Cartoons stay hot forever.

(Anonymous) 2025-05-15 10:42 am (UTC)(link)
I've seen both "sixpack" and "washboard" terms for a nice set of abs.

I get what you mean Secret OP. The expectations for any actor to remain fit and looking really good when little or no clothes are on are ridiculous, but at the same time, it's annoying some male actors seem to get to cover up and hide their body when it's not looking hot like how audiences expect.

IMO though I'd rather we just not have such expectations for any actor.

I can actually only think of this happening one time. Is this common?!
